GETTING SPINES HEALTHY AGAIN

LUMBAR LORDOSIS – STRUCTURE EFFECTS FUNCTION

When it comes to the long term health of your spinal, structural alignment matters – including your lumbar lordosis!
That is, the shape of your spine is important.

This includes how well your spine is positioned from a front-on view – your spine should be straight from top to bottom like a ruler.
When looking at the position of your spine from the side, there should be 3 curves; a backwards curve in both you neck and lower back, and a forwards facing curve in your mid back. These curves should be in relative proportions and should stack up in an orderly fashion.

Your lower back curve is called a lumbar lordosis, your neck curve is call a cervical lordosis whilst your mid back curve is referred to as a thoracic kyphosis. These are normal curves which should exist in your spine.

Changes away from an ideal curve may be causing you weak links in the chain to your spinal health!

In a previous blog I wrote about how this is often a missed cause of low back pain, stiffness and reduced spinal function.

When the core structure of your body, being your spine, is performing poorly, this can cause imbalances within your body as a whole

YOUR SPINE AND BRAIN

Your spine is more than just a stack of moving bones, it is intricately connect to your nervous system.
You nervous system is made up of you brain, spinal cord and all the nerve structures of your body.
It rolls in your being is to coordinate, regulating and healing you.
Interference with how accurately your nervous system can do it jobs generally don’t lead to positive health outcomes…

CHANGES TO YOUR LUMBAR LORDOSIS CAN IMPACT BRAIN FUNCTION

Abnormal shifts in the spine create abnormal loads and pressure on the joints, discs, muscles and ligaments of the spine. These tissues are full of different receptor types such as pain receptors and receptors the tell your brain how things are positioned and moving.

As well as leading to symptoms like low back pain, back stiffness, back tension and reduced movement, alterations to your core structure may reduce the accuracy of the communication pathways between your brain and body.
It’s almost like there is poor reception between your brain and body and they aren’t completely in sync!
This can create more problems then just back pain and stiffness… Problems like an increased stress responses, changes to body awareness, changes to balance and energy levels.
